While those stereotypes might be true for some TS users, the fact is that a few minutes of tweaking with the program will likely provide you with significant objectively measurable decreases in temperatures and increases in battery life and real-world performance. I've had it clocked like this for quite a while now. FLIPfire maybe you should make a note saying that "If the person overclocks his Cpu when gaming he should use that speed as the basis of his undervolting since overclocking when you already have a a decent undervoltage setup will give you more trouble". In order to reach high overclocks, generally we have to overvolt, or increase the voltage, of the CPU. As overclocking and overvolting will increase power consumption in a CPU, you can imagine that doing the opposite will reduce power consumption, which is very useful for devices running on batteries, such as laptops.
Now one question you may have is why is this possible and why do CPU manufacturers not use lower voltages by default. The answer to this is because CPUs are manufactured using mass production methods and specifications are rated very conservatively to ensure every chip is able to operate at a certain voltage at a certain frequency.
This means some chips will be able to run at significantly lower voltages at the same frequency without issue while others cannot. Before we begin, keep in mind that overvolting and undervolting a CPU beyond manufacturer specifications may damage your system, so use this guide at your own risk.
Additionally, this guide is designed for Intel systems running Windows only. In order to do this, simply click on the wrench on the top right corner of the system monitoring section to open the System Monitor configuration.
From here, scroll down to core voltage and check the box to enable core voltage monitoring. Go ahead and close the System Monitor configuration box.
Use this as the baseline voltage of your system without any undervolting. This will bring up a list of CPU variables that can be changed such as voltage, turbo boost, etc. Mouse over to the Core Voltage Offset and reduce your voltage by small increments and clicking apply. A reduction in voltage is denoted by a minus - symbol before a number.
Once you reach Then continue lowering voltage by 0. Then, record this number, reduce the undervolt and stress test the system.

On modern CPUs, the multipliers are set differently. Setting it higher will have no effect, and setting it lower will be the same as not setting it.Small form factor enthusiasts repeatedly stuff power hungry components into tighter spaces. Sometimes things get too hot, too loud, or too powerful. Or maybe a power supply is starting to fail, etc. Luckily, one can undervolt their most power hungry component, which is more likely than not the GPU, and can achieve power savings with temperature reduction all without sacrificing performance.
And undervolting the GPU can be done quite quickly by any layperson. P Kill a Watt for monitoring electricity usage from the wall. It is my opinion that drawing obscene amounts of power to run these stress tests is just too unrealistic.
How to undervolt your gpu
Benchmarks should be stressful enough, else what are they benchmarking? Due note that it is easiest to perform undervolting with a PSU that is in good working condition with enough power to supply components at stock and then transfer to a smaller PSU if desired. This is also not a requirement, but saves troubleshooting time for those sticking w of components in with a w PSU. HWiNFO important sensors highlighted. I chose my target frequency to be mhz — mhz over boost and 26mhz under max, as during benchmarking the gpu clock was pinned at mhz most the time this is where HWiNFO average readings can come in handy!
I change my target frequency later on. Find our target voltage of mv and take note of the frequency mhz in the screenshot. Default frequency curve.
Our target frequency mhz is greater than mhz by 51mhz, so we switch back to the starting window and increase the core clock by 51mhz. Increase core clocks by 51MHz. Ensure the windows icon is selected to apply profile on boot. It is rare that undervolts would cause significant instability like blue screens, system freezes, or screen artifacts.

Undervolting means to reduce the voltage a component receives. Why does this matter? Lowering the voltage, even by relatively small amounts, reduces the power draw of the components in this case, the CPU and thus decreases the heat generated while increasing battery life. Actually, there is little to no risk involved. Again, although this is a safe process with little to no chance to damage any components in fact, it should increase their longevity, as they will run coolerproceed at your own risk! Unzip ThrottleStop to the directory of your choice and run it as an administrator. I will get to the other functions of this software later. Understand that most changes you make in TS are only for the profile you have selected. See what others have been able to successfully achieve stably and use that as a starting range. To start undervolting on this profile, follow the following steps. The greater the undervolt, the cooler the CPU will run and the less power it will use. This can lead to temperature drops under full load of anywhere between C, meaning your computer will be able to operate faster for longer, all the while generating less heat.
At this point, once you have set up the undervolting, you can use Task Scheduler to start ThrottleStop with your computer and the undervolts will stick.
Depending on the quality of the design of your computer you may have issues with throttling, heat, fan noise, or maybe all three. Many, many notebooks are just not designed properly for the components they contain these days. Case in point: I first started using ThrottleStop years ago because of the overpowered but undersized Acer TG, which would throttle from 2. The The solution? I used ThrottleStop and its profile abilities to limit the peak clocks of the computer dynamically, based on the temperature of the CPU.
By limiting the clocks to 1. Unchecked, both of these machines ran into issues due to high CPU temperatures. These types of temperatures are terrible for the longevity of the components, including the GPU, SSD, and especially battery… Not to mention that these kind of temperatures result in your laptop fans sounding like a during takeoff. So, assuming you have an Nvidia card, check the box, quit and restart TS, then come back to the options menu.
There are 2 columns. What did we just do, exactly? We set up 2 separate temperature triggers for 2 separate ThrottleStop profiles which we will create shortly.
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) Undervolting Guide
Setting a DTS of 8 means that at about 92C, your computer will switch to profile 2, which we will set up to be slightly slower. Setting the GPU of 89C means that if your GPU hits 89C, your computer will switch to profile 3 which will be the slowest one, designed to reduce temperatures. This is the profile that your machine will be using by default whenever you plug into AC, if checked that option.
If you want max performance, then leave everything else unchecked. For example, on an i7 HQ, turbo will go up to 3. This is good because it will keep temperatures down, however, it might be either too conservative for you it will run cool and could be running faster or not conservative enough if temperatures are still getting high without turbodepending on your system.
The exact temperature is up to your hardware and your taste, just remember that hotter temperatures mean shorter-lived components.However, given the colossal assembly line at which these processors roll out, some processor models are tested at voltages higher than they really need.
You save power when the CPU consumes less of it. This also leads to your system not heating up as much meaning the fans will no have to work as hard. Disclaimer: This process is straight forward and considered safe, but if you end up configuring the wrong thing, you could damage your PC. So do this exclusively at your own risk. Note: This is laptop exclusive because extending battery life is not a concern for desktops. Even though the core methodology works for both PC and Android mobile, we will cover only PC, as Android needs to be rooted for this process.
Lastly, this process requires patience, because there is a lot of testing involved. Overclocking requires that we modify hardware to perform at greater levels than it was tested at.
So, if you could make your CPU perform at the factory configuration by consuming less electricity, you will increase your battery life in two phases. Phase 1 is the actual electricity you save in operating the processor and phase 2 is the power you save when your fan does not have to turn on as frequently. This, in turn, can extend the life of the system as well. Here is how you can safely undervolt your CPU. To undervolt your CPU, your laptop should be fully charged before you get started.
It is a simple tool that this will serve our introductory purposes today. Make sure you take a system backup. In the off chance things do go South, you will need a backup in case restoration is needed. Upon launching XTU, you will be greeted with a splash screen with all the action items in a menu on the left. This will be very useful when you start tinkering with the voltage.
Additionally, run some stress tests on your system as well. Ideally you should let it run for at least 30 minutes. In this time your CPU will get hot and your fans will start running at full capacity. Once the test is complete you will have a very good reference to how your CPU normally behaves.
If your values are at default, they will all be in blue. Y ou will see a list of voltages at 0. What you want to do is click on this voltage and scroll up to when you start seeing negative voltages.
